Forgive and forget? The past and present collide for two sisters who survived a tragedy—and must now survive the truth behind it.
It’s been twenty years since Cara’s boyfriend died in a horrible accident and her sister, Anna, went to prison. The tragedy has become a local legend, but Cara has moved past her grief to have a successful career and a happy family. Pity about Anna. Recently released from incarceration, she’s struggling with addiction, guilt, and shame—a shattered life. Cara’s forgiveness seems to be the only thing that helps her pick up the pieces.
But as Anna pulls herself together, her memories of that night on the bridge start to come into focus. And few of them match her sister’s.
As past secrets unfold and nothing is what it seems anymore, Anna desperately searches for the truth. But what if Cara doesn’t want her to find it?
Rapid Falls Reviews
Often I can’t get into fiction, because I find that stories proceed without giving me enough reason to ‘care’ about the characters. Rapid falls is nothing like that. I’ve never read something where the characters have been so relatable yet extreme, so loveable at times, and shocking at others.
Without giving anything away, the story focuses on Cara, whose sister is released from prison, after being put away years ago for the death of Cara's first love. The book takes you through Cara's journey, fighting to keep the perfect life she's worked so hard for, while her imperfect past catches up, threatening her happiness all over again.
Cowie skillfully alternates a gripping present day storyline, with a deeply secretive backstory. As a reader, I've never experienced this, but I loved it. Between the layered character development and the unraveling mystery, the two timelines tie together seamlessly. This was a page turner! I actually can't wait to read it again. Obviously, recommended.
Family drama, hidden secrets, dual timelines ... what more could you ask for?!
Cara Piper’s high school boyfriend drowned in a car accident the night of their graduation - but - her sister Anna was driving the car...
This plot point intrigued me instantly (and is revealed very early so is not a spoiler) - especially since 20 years later, the relationship between the sisters is definitely unique. Anna struggles with addiction after the accident and Cara is always saving her ... but at what cost? What toll has the accident taken on all the members of the Piper family and the town of Rapid Falls? This story unwinds so fast you will be on the edge of your seat with excitement and speeding to get to the next chapter!
I received an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
My immediate thought after finishing this was, now THAT is how you write a psychological thriller! I’m blown away that this is a debut, Cowie’s writing is polished and sharp and she plotted one hell of a story, if this is how she begins her career as an author I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next.
This follows two sisters, Anna and Cara and flips between the late nineties and 2016. The girls were in high school in 1997 and were both in a tragic accident that killed Cara’s boyfriend. Anna’s life went down the drain afterwards, she spent time in prison and developed an alcohol addiction while Cara moved on and has a picture perfect life with her husband and daughter. Two very different outcomes and both women were interesting and complex.
The events leading up to the accident are slowly revealed in alternating chapters as you begin to piece together what really happened. Let me tell you, I thought I knew what happened and I was way off, this had a good reveal, a twist if you wanna call it that but it’s not a book that’s solely dependent on a shocking twist but instead was awesome all the way through. If you can’t tell, I loved this one and highly recommend it to thriller fans!
Wow, this is a real psychological thriller, alternating between two time periods, twenty years apart. Sisters, Cara and Anna are in a fatal accident that claims the life of Cara’s boyfriend Jesse and Anna is charged with a felony DUI. The time frames relate incidents over the period prior, during and following the tragedy, then covers twenty years later, as the participants continue to struggle in their lives in the aftermath.
It is a story of sibling rivalry, parental favoritism, teenage craziness and the toll bad choices take on young lives. This is a debut novel by Amber Crowe, but had all the maturity and poise of an experienced novelist. Her character development was wonderful, as we saw the growth that came from love, life and experiences, during the twenty year span. But unresolved questions involving the tragedy, have prevented those involved, from moving on. Her descriptions of the town and the scenery of Rapid Falls, made me feel as if I had been there, an observer of this bizarre tale.
The twists and turns of the story kept me reading, and anticipating the ending that was going to be a gut check, and it was!
I received this ARC from Lake Union Publishers and Net Galley and I thank them for the opportunity to read this 5 star thriller.
Wow! What a twisty ride! Rapid Falls is a fast paced thriller told in a dual timeline that kept me turning the pages to find out the ending! Surprisingly, this book is Amber Cowie's debut and she hit it out of the park! I can't wait to read her next book!
